Pediatric Social Relationship Scales (PSRS)

How have an adolescents social relationships been over the past month?

The Pediatric Social Relationship Scale is a 31-question survey that measures the social relationship of adolescents. The questions measure 3 variables: social support, companionship, and social distress. This survey can be used to explore relationships between age, gender, and mental health. Past research suggests that children's ability to create social relationships has an effect on future physical and emotional well being. (Dietz et al., 2022).

What data is collected? How is it scored?
The following variables are recorded:
  • PSRS_socialsupport:Higher scores mean participants experience greater perceived social support from peers and/or family.
  • PSRS_companionship:Higher scores mean participants experience greater feelings of companionship and engagement in social activities with peers.
  • PSRS_socialdistress:Higher scores mean participants experience greater feelings of distress, discomfort, and difficulty in social situations.
  • PSRS_subscales_totalsum: Higher scores mean participants are more competent at creating/maintaining social relationships.
  • PSRS_socialsupport_avg: Higher averages mean participants experience greater perceived social support from peers and/or family.
  • PSRS_companionship_avg:Higher averages mean participants experience greater feelings of companionship and engagement in social activities with peers.
  • PSRS_socialdistress_avg:Higher averages mean participants experience greater feelings of distress, discomfort, and difficulty in social situations.
  • PSRS_total_avg:Higher averages mean participants are more competent at creating/maintaining social relationships.
Raw data: 31 questions combined to make 3 variables (social support, companionship, social distress). Each question uses a 5 point likert scale format. 19 questions are reverse coded.

Calculation:
Subscores are determined by summing the scores of the corresponding items. Reverse scoring is applied to 7 items of companionship and all 12 items of social distress. Total PSRS scores are determined by adding the subscale scores. The Likert scale ranges from 1 ("strongly disagree") to 5 ("strongly agree"), so the sum of the social support subscale will range from 7 to 35 while companionship and social distress will range from 12 to 60.

  • PSRS_socialsupport: Sum of questions 1-7
  • PSRS_companionship: Sum of questions 8-19
  • PSRS_socialdistress: Sum of questions 20-31
  • PSRS_subscales_totalsum: Sum of all 3 subscales
  • PSRS_socialsupport_avg: Avg of questions 1-7
  • PSRS_companionship_avg: Sum of questions 8-19
  • PSRS_socialdistress_avg: Sum of questions 20-31
  • PSRS_total_avg: Avg of 1-31
