Situational Motivation Scale (SIMS)

How motivated are you right now?

The Situational Motivation Scale (SIMS) measures intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in various situations. It was developed by Guay, Vallerand, and Blanchard in 2000 and has been widely used in research. The scale consists of 16 items that measure four types of motivation: intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, external regulation, and amotivation. Intrinsic motivation refers to engaging in an activity for the inherent enjoyment or interest in the activity itself. Identified regulation is engaging in an activity because it aligns with one's values or goals. External regulation is engaging in an activity for external reasons, such as rewards or to avoid punishment. Amotivation refers to a lack of motivation for the activity. Researchers can use the SIMS to assess the situational motivation of participants and gain insight into the factors that influence their behavior and performance.

Parameters
This survey cannot be tweaked.

What data is collected? How is it scored?
The following variables are recorded:
  • SIMS_intrinsic_motivation
  • SIMS_identified_regulation
  • SIMS_external_regulation
  • SIMS_amotivation
Raw data: 16 items divided into 4 subscales.

Calculation:
SIMS_intrinsic_motivation = Average of the intrinsic_motivation items (1, 5, 9, 13)
SIMS_identified_regulation = Average of the identified_regulation items (2, 6, 10, 14)
SIMS_external_regulation = Average of the external_regulation items (3, 7, 11, 15)
SIMS_amotivation = Average of the amotivation items (4, 8; 12; 16)

What participants see before taking the survey

In this survey, you will be asked to rate how well statements regarding motivated behavior apply to you.

What participants see after taking the survey

Thanks for filling out this survey! The SIMS survey enables researchers to get a brief assessment of situational motivation in their participants.
