Self-Regulation Questionnaire (SRQ-L)

How engaged are you in your with your schoolwork?

The Student Regulation Questionnaire for Adolescents (SRQ-L) is a tool designed to understand why high school students engage in their academic tasks. Geared towards students in late elementary and middle school, this questionnaire aims to explore the various reasons behind their school-related behaviors. Unlike similar questionnaires for adults, the SRQ-L employs a 4-point scale, making it more suitable for younger participants, typically around 8 years of age.
The SRQ-L encompasses four regulatory styles: external regulation, introjected regulation, identified regulation, and intrinsic motivation. Each style reflects different motivations behind students' engagement in school activities.

Parameters
This survey cannot be tweaked.

What data is collected? How is it scored?
The following variables are recorded:
  • SRQL_externalRegulation
  • SRQL_introjectedRegulation
  • SRQL_identifiedRegulationMean
  • SRQL_intrinsicMotivation
  • SRQL_RAI

Calculation:
SRQL_externalRegulation: Mean of External Regulation items : 2, 6, 9, 14, 20, 24, 25, 28, 32
SRQL_introjectedRegulation: Mean of Introjected Regulation: 1, 4, 10, 12, 17, 18, 26, 29, 31
SRQL_identifiedRegulationMean of Identified Regulation: 5, 8, 11, 16, 21, 23, 30
SRQL_intrinsicMotivation: Mean of Intrinsic Motivation: 3, 7, 13, 15, 19, 22, 27
SRQL_RAI: 2 X Intrinsic + Identified - Introjected - 2 X External

What participants see before taking the survey

In this task, you are asked to rate how well specific statements apply to you.

What participants see after taking the survey

The SRQ-L allows researchers to investigate types of motivation as they relate to school work.

Scoring

Scoring the SRQ-L (standard version). First, you calculate the subscale score for each of the four subscales by averaging the items that make up that subscale. Very true is scored 4; Sort of true is scored 3; Not very true is scored 2; and Not at all true is scored 1. The four subscales are: external regulation, introjected regulation, identified regulation, and intrinsic motivation. Listed below are the item numbers associated with each of the four subscales. External Regulation: 2, 6, 9, 14, 20, 24, 25, 28, 32 Introjected Regulation: 1, 4, 10, 12, 17, 18, 26, 29, 31 Identified Regulation: 5, 8, 11, 16, 21, 23, 30 Intrinsic Motivation: 3, 7, 13, 15, 19, 22, 27 You can use the individual subscale scores in your analyses, and you can also use the Relative Autonomy Index (RAI). To form the RAI for this scale, use the following formula to combine the subscale scores: 2 X Intrinsic + Identified - Introjected - 2 X External
