Pro-Environmental Behavior Scale (PEBS)

Are people engaging in pro-environmental behaviors?

The Pro-Environmental Behavior Scale (PEBS) is a 13-question measure of pro-environmental behaviors. The questions measure four variables including conservation lifestyle, land stewardship, social environmentalism, and environmental citizenship. This survey can be used to explore relationships between different pro-environmental behaviors and variables like climate anxiety, personality, and geographic location. Past research suggests that people who reported feeling more connected to nature also reported engaging in more pro-environmental behaviors (Rosa et al., 2018).

What data is collected? How is it scored?
The following variables are recorded:
  • PEBS_conservation_lifestyle: Higher scores mean participants are engaging in more behaviors that influence environmental sustainability on broad scales, including activities such as recycling, energy and water conservation, and “green” consumerism.
  • PEBS_land_stewardship: Higher scores mean the participants are engaging in more behaviors that generally involve more direct engagement with local ecosystems; these actions included wildlife habitat management on public and private lands and participation in ecological monitoring.
  • PEBS_social_environmentalism: Higher scores mean the participants are engaging in more environmental activities with other people such as participation in local environmental groups or talking to others about environmental issues.
  • PEBS_environmental_citizenship: Higher scores mean the participants are engaging in more behaviors that contribute to environmental policy and decision making efforts such as voting to support environmental policies or candidates, writing letters to politicians or local papers, initiating or signing pro-environmental petitions, or donating money to support conservation causes.
Raw data: 13 questions broken into 4 variables (conservation lifestyle, land stewardship, social environmentalism, and environmental citizenship). Each variable's score ranges from 1-5.

Calculation:
Subscores are determined by averaging the scores of the questions in each variable. The Likert scale ranges from 1 ("never") to 5 ("very often"), so the averages of the scores will also range from 1-5.

  • PEBS_conservation_lifestyle: Average of questions 11, 12, 13
  • PEBS_land_stewardship: Average of questions 8, 9, 10
  • PEBS_social_environmentalism: Average of questions 1, 2, 7
  • PEBS_environmental_citizenship: Average of questions 3, 4, 5, 6
