How do self-report and cognitive tasks contribute to scientific inquiry?

Scientists use different tools to conduct human brain and behavior research. For example, as a study participant, you may be asked to report on your own behaviors, beliefs or attitudes in a survey. Or you may be asked to complete a cognitive task. These often involve responding as quickly and accurately as possible to visual objects or sounds.

Scientists may be interested in a possible relationship between your survey responses and your behavior on the cognitive task. And/or they may want to record your brain activity while you complete this task.

Other research studies are designed to learn about effects of an intervention (such as mindfulness training): you may be asked to complete a task, do something, and then complete the task again. This process helps to determine if the intervention can change your brain function!
